Disconnected....Physically

“Disconnected” Reaction

I am so extremely glad I had the opportunity to view this documentary. This was an awesome student made project. Right away this video caught my attention because the students that made this went to Carlton College in Northfield Minnesota. That town and college is less than 10 miles from my house; so I thought that was really cool.

Disconnecting and completely logging off from a computer as a student in college is a bold move! What these 3 students did was incredible. I think that the lack of constant connection and interaction would be the hardest habit to break. It was unbelievable that they were typing papers on the typewriters and writing multiple rough drafts on paper just to finish one assignment. I give props and respect to each one of them. That would be so hard not to check email and be constantly in the loop. I do think that there communication skills grew, they talked with teachers and staff more; but most importantly they chatted as friends more in person. They also found them selves with much more free time because they weren’t tempted to putts around on the computer via YouTube, Facebook, or Email. More time spent on homework is a good thing but this experiment didn’t happen without stress. I felt o bad for the one girl who continued to have typewriter trouble, she was borderline in tears, and she was so fed up not having computer access.
I think this document is awesome and entertaining at the same time. This sense of Internet or social media addiction is real. Just puttsing on the computer is what seems to be my downfall; A few minutes to check my email turns into, 2 solid hours on Facebook, or YouTube.  On the flip side, I do think that there should be national unplug day, were nobody uses there computers. This would help the public interact more personally and would be a cool challenge on a grander scale. Overall I am extremely glad I viewed this film and plan on using the Internet less as a personal challenge.
